Amman Arab University’s (AAU) Faculty of Pharmacy Organizes Awareness Campaign Titled “Towards a Smoke-Free Generation”
The Faculty of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University organized an awareness campaign titled “Towards a Smoke-Free Generation” as part of the activities of the Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications course. The campaign involved a group of pharmacy students under the supervision of the course Lecturer, Dr. Majd Makableh, and was held at the Faculty of Pharmacy and several university buildings. The campaign aimed to raise awareness of the health and economic risks associated with smoking, encourage smoking cessation, and promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles.
The campaign featured a series of educational and interactive stations, where students provided health information and guidance on the harmful effects of smoking and methods of quitting. The activities also included awareness posters and QR codes providing access to relevant information, as well as games and interactive activities designed to reinforce key health messages and enhance participants’ knowledge of smoking prevention and cessation. The campaign received notable engagement from university students and staff, providing an opportunity to learn about the risks associated with smoking and ways to overcome this habit. A number of individuals interested in quitting smoking were also referred to the university’s Smoking Cessation Clinic to benefit from its specialized services and consultations.
In this regard, Professor Dr. Mohammad Al-Widyan, President of Amman Arab University, stated that the university has, for several years, placed significant emphasis on promoting a safe and healthy university environment. He noted that the university has established the Higher Committee for Combating Smoking and Drugs, which undertakes awareness, prevention, and smoking- and drug-control efforts through educational programs and campaigns aimed at raising awareness among students and staff about their health and social risks and consequences. He emphasized that the university continues to support these efforts and foster a culture of prevention and health responsibility within the university community.
For her part, Professor Dr. Rana Abu Hweij, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University, explained that the university’s Smoking Cessation Clinic provides specialized services for individuals wishing to quit smoking, under the supervision of qualified pharmacists and physicians who have received specialized training through the Clinical Tobacco Treatment Training Program (CTTTP). This training enhances their readiness to provide specialized guidance and support and to help individuals seeking to quit develop personalized cessation plans tailored to their needs. She emphasized the importance of promoting a culture of prevention and health awareness, noting that the role of the Faculty of Pharmacy extends beyond academic and educational responsibilities to include community service and the promotion of public health by providing students with opportunities to apply their pharmaceutical knowledge and skills through health and awareness initiatives that contribute to creating a positive impact in the community.
This campaign is part of the Faculty of Pharmacy’s ongoing efforts to promote health education and prevention, engage pharmacy students in community service, and raise health awareness, in alignment with the university’s mission of strengthening social responsibility, promoting applied education, and advancing the quality of pharmaceutical practice.
