Pharmacy Student Al-Humoud from Amman Arab University (AAU) Wins Third Place for “Smart Therapeutic Patch” Project
As part of Amman Arab University’s (AAU) commitment to supporting creativity and innovation, and empowering its students to transform scientific ideas into impactful practical projects, Mahmoud Al-Humoud—a master’s student in Pharmacovigilance and Regulatory Affairs at the College of Pharmacy—secured third place in the North Amman Entrepreneurship Hackathon. He was awarded a cash prize of 1,000 Jordanian Dinars for his innovative project titled “Smart Therapeutic Patch.”
The project focuses on utilizing advanced transdermal drug delivery technologies to administer medication with greater accuracy and flexibility. This approach enhances treatment management, improves patient experience and comfort, and reduces reliance on certain traditional drug administration methods, aligning with modern developments in drug delivery and innovative therapeutic solutions. During his participation in the North Amman Entrepreneurship Hackathon, the project was registered under an intellectual property protection application—a step that reflects the project’s innovative value and supports Al-Humoud’s path toward developing the idea into a scalable and investable application in the future.
In this regard, Al-Humoud explained that his interest in health innovation developed through an academic and training experience spanning nearly three years at King Fahd Hospital in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This experience allowed him to closely observe several challenges related to treatment, medication, and patient needs, which motivated him to search for applicable innovative and research-based solutions. He emphasized his aspiration to continue utilizing his academic knowledge and field expertise to develop innovative health and tech solutions, transforming healthcare challenges into practical projects with a tangible impact and applied value, thereby supporting innovation pathways and the development of healthcare services.
The hackathon was organized as an initiative by the “Irada” program, in cooperation with the Center for Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship at Amman Arab University, and with the participation of several institutions supporting innovation and entrepreneurship. The event aimed to empower youth and encourage them to develop innovative solutions for local challenges, turning entrepreneurial ideas into viable, practical projects. The hackathon witnessed the registration of 169 participants, reflecting the high level of interest in initiatives aimed at promoting a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among young people.
On this occasion, Prof. Rana Abu-Hwaij, Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University, praised Al-Humoud’s achievement. She emphasized that the excellence demonstrated by the college’s students in innovation and scientific research reflects the academic and entrepreneurial standards that the college strives to establish, as well as its approach to providing a supportive and stimulating environment for creativity and excellence. She noted the College of Pharmacy’s keenness to empower its students to develop their scientific ideas into innovative projects and solutions with applied value, expressing her pride in this achievement and wishing student Al-Humoud further success and excellence in his academic and innovative journey.
This achievement comes as part of an ongoing research and innovation track for students at the College of Pharmacy at Amman Arab University. This track includes developing several qualitative projects in healthcare, including specialized projects in targeted cancer therapy using nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, alongside the (PharmaTrack) project, which aims to enhance therapeutic compliance and improve patient follow-up. This reflects the diverse fields of innovation that the college’s students are working on and their ability to employ scientific knowledge in developing innovative health solutions.
